Pick of the weekend…Independence Day BBQ at the Sycamore

Many of you may be headed for the beach or suburbs for the Fourth of July weekend to relax and enjoy some time outdoors (we’re going to Florida!). But if you aren’t leaving the city, you can still get your BBQ and brews this Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. at the Sycamore on Cortelyou Road in Brooklyn. They’ll be serving Brooklyn Brewery beers to go with burgers and hot dogs. Beers and food are $5 each.

Why we love…Brooklyn Beer and Soda

The Prospect Heights/Crown Heights area may need more craft beer options but it’s got a great craft beer store in Brooklyn Beer and Soda. It resembles other beer distributors that don’t fuss about appearance and instead focus on selection. Thanks to its location on Washington Avenue in Prospect Heights the store is rarely packed and you can often find some hidden gems that were snatched up at the more buzzed about craft beer stores (we have recently picked up some Founders Nemesis 2010 and Brooklyn Black Ops, among others). Peak Organic Brewing Dinner at The Vanderbilt

Tuesday’s beer dinner at The Vanderbilt with Peak Organic Brewing Co. (full menu here) from Maine highlighted organic beer and local food in a four course pairing menu. Each pairing was presented by Peak co-founder Mike Cadoux who started as a homebrewer with his brother Jon (currently Peak’s brewer) eleven years ago. The brothers fell started brewing organically when their homebrews picked up a new level of “crispness” that they didn’t have before. Pick of the weekend…Peekskill Brewery Pig Out

If you love to eat various pig products and drink delicious local beer you will get your chance to combine the two this Sunday, June 26 at the Peekskill Brewery Pig Out. The event’s slogan is “Respect the Pig” and the brewery will be doing so by serving twenty different dishes that use every part of the pig in a “nose to tail” way. Peekskill Brewery beers will be offered to pair with the dishes. The $50 tickets must be purchased in advance and include food and beer.

Why we love…McSorley’s Ale House

It may look a little run down and is often overcrowded but McSorley’s Ale House on East Seventh Street in the East Village has been serving delicious beer since the 1850s (in the U.S. this is basically forever). The walls are covered with newspaper clippings and bits of history. If you like history or old things, McSorley’s is definitely worth the trip. Your beer options are  “light” and “dark” which are served in pairs of small mugs. We like the dark better but have fun mixing our own black and tans. Beertography Recognition

We knew that our love and appreciation of Founders beer would prove rewarding someday. We’re very happy (thrilled? ecstatic?) that we won the beertography contest featuring the brewery on! Double Trouble took home the prize for us – posing with the hops at the New York Botanical Garden – and our collection of bottles garnered an honorable mention. Thanks John and Founders! We especially like the description of our Double Trouble photo.

Tuesday’s Beer Dinner at the Vanderbilt

Pick of the Weekend: Festival of 7 Ingredients

This Saturday, June 18, Edible Manhattan will host the Festival of 7 Ingredients at the Open House Gallery in SoHo. The event features seven different ingredients with beers from Brooklyn’s Kelso Brewery for pairing. The menu is set to include oyster stew, pork belly skewers, and strawberry rhubarb pie. We are sure that the guys at Kelso will come up with some great pairings. Check out Edible Manhattan’s website for more details and tickets. The event seems like a nice warm up before July craft beer month which culminates with Good Beer at BAM on July 26.

Why we love…Strong Place

Just down the street from American Beer Distributor is Strong Place, one of our favorite beer and food locations in Brooklyn. Decoration is sparse (and tasteful) but the beer selection is excellent, with 24 rotating taps that feature American craft brews. The beers include rare brews like Allagash’s Curieux as well as local ones from Kelso and Sixpoint for reasonable prices. Strong Place also features a solid menu with small plates (we especially like the deviled eggs) and entrees for lunch and dinner. Some Classic Craft Cans

Recently we’ve jumped on the can bandwagon by snatching up new releases like Brooklyn Summer Ale and Sixpoint The Crisp. But craft beer isn’t new to cans – we thought it would be nice to highlight a couple of breweries who have really advocated for the use of the can.
