NYC Beer Week 2016

Well friends, it’s that time of year again. When we spend one glorious week (plus two bonus days) celebrating the best that New York City beer has to offer. Coming up this Friday, February 19, through February 28 is New York City Beer Week 2016!

Beer Week is hosted by the New York City Brewers Guild, an organization made up of the breweries in New York City to advocate for and celebrate each other.

Beer Week was founded in the fall of 2008 by Josh Schaffner. The Brewers Guild took the helm a few years ago.

In the end of January we attended the Beer Week press preview (some snaps from that event are below) hosted by Kelly Taylor, founder of KelSo and president of the Guild. Many of the city’s newest and greatest breweries were pouring libations, and let us tell you: the beer in NYC is tasting mighty fine. We would even go out on a limb and say that this beer week might just be the best yet.

For the second year in a row, each of the brewers have made a SMaSH beer, which in this case stands for State Malt and State Hops (it normally stands for Single Malt and Single Hop). Each of the beers will be made using the same ingredients, so it’s a chance for the brewers to express their creativity. Edible’s got a list of some SMaSH beers you might want to try out here.

These are some events we’re super stoked about (Take a Lyft back home afterward! New users can use the code BEERUNION for a free first ride up to $20!):

Opening Bash: The Brewers Guild is kicking off the 8th Annual NYC Beer Week with two cruises around New York Harbor on Saturday, February 20. While you sample beers from New York City and around the State you’ll be treated to views of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. You can taste food from The Randolph, Jake’s Handcrafted, Pacific Standard, and Beast of Bourbon. Tickets are $85.39 each.

Fried Chicken and Donuts: On Sunday, February 21, you can get all your guilty pleasures in one place at The Redhead in the East Village. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. beers from Other Half Brewing will be paired with fried chicken and Underwest Donuts.

New York Tap Takeover at Taproom 307: The variety and quality of New York beer has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years. Taste for yourself at Taproom 307 on Monday, February 22, when 42 taps lines will be devoted to beers from this state.

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout Turns 21: Brooklyn Brewery’s Black Chocolate Stout has been a mainstay of craft beer drinkers for years. Twenty-one, in fact. Brewmaster Garrett Oliver will guide you through a vertical tasting of 10 vintages dating back to 2004,on Monday, February 22. Entry is free but you do need to reserve a spot for the tasting.

Brewer’s Choice: One of our favorite beer events of the year returns to Sanders Studio in Clinton Hill on Wednesday, February 24. Taste from a dizzying selection of beers from some of the region’s best breweries like Transmitter, Peekskill, Grimm, and Bunker. Many of the New York brewers will be serving the State Malt and State Hops (SMaSH) beers they brewed for Beer Week. The $80 ticket includes beer and food.

Cask Fest and Awards Gala: Close out Beer Week with a cask festival at the Altman Building on Saturday, February 27. Cask beers from all over the state will be served. From Community Beer Works in Buffalo, to Greenport Harbor on Long Island, taste the different ways brewers can use this traditional method of serving beer to highlight flavors. The festival will also serve as the Beer Week Awards Gala and name the winners of People’s Choice brewery, Favorite Bartender, Bar, Event, and New York State Brewery. Tickets start at $69.57 and include beer and food.
