Watch the Superbowl at a Brewery

Football and beer are a winning combination, so we’d suggest you watch football’s biggest game at one of New York’s breweries. Here’s a list of NYC breweries where you can sip on fresh beer while enjoying the game: Flagship Brewing  – If you’re on Staten Island your only option sounds like a tasty one with a $65 open bar starting at 5 p.m. and a half time buffet that includes swedish meatballs, chicken parm, and sausage and peppers to name a few dishes. The Bronx Brewery – You can watch the game on a 155 inch screen while chowing down on pizza and wings. Email…

Don’t Give Up the Ship!

Good beer and cheese might be an irresistible combination, so we can’t let Friday’s “Don’t Give Up the Ship!” event at Brouwerij Lane in Greenpoint go without mention. The bar will be hosting Flagship Brewing, Staten Island’s only brewery, on Friday evening from 7-10 p.m. You’ll have the opportunity to try year-round beers like Flagship’s APA (American Pale Ale), American Wit, and Dark Mild as well as seasonal beers. You’ll be able to pair your beers with grilled cheese sandwiches from Vermont’s Consider Bardwell Farms. Sandwiches will be pressed with a variety of ingredients like kale, bacon, tomato jam and more.

Grimm Releases Color Field

Grimm Artisanal Ales has been steadily releasing beers in a wide range of styles from an imperial stout to a grisette since 2013. The creative brewers are releasing their next experiment, Color Field, on Saturday, January 17, at Beer Street in Brooklyn. Grimm calls the beer an American wild ale brewed with flowers. The beer features hibiscus, rose hips, and chamomile and is fermented with a funky yeast concoction.  Color Field and other beers from Grimm will be available at the event.

Adirondack at The Adirondack

This Friday, January 9, starting at 7 p.m., the Lake George brewery will be on tap at Windsor Terrace watering hole The Adirondack.  The beers slated to be poured are the Iroquois Pale Ale, the Beaver Brown, Belgian Solstice, and Blackberry Stout. Each beer will be paired with a bite of food. 508 Gastrobrewery Closes

With the frenetic growth of beer in New York City it is sometimes easy to forget just how tough it is to run a brewery, bar, or restaurant. A recent spate of closings including Chelsea Brewing and the Union Square location of Heartland Brewery served as a reminder of this fact. The latest is the closure of 508 Gastrobrewery. The restaurant had been brewing for almost four years on a system cobbled together in the basement first by Anderson Sant’Anna De Lima. The brewpub suffered heavy damage during hurricane Sandy. Following the hurricane Chris Cuzme (left) took over the brewing operations, and after cleaning…

Brewing with Gun Hill

Back in February 2014 when our book was published, its release coincided with the opening of Gun Hill Brewing Company in the Bronx. The brewery launched its first beers during NYC Beer Week and participated in our New York beer night at Park Slope’s The Gate. After finishing up our book tour this fall we thought it would be a great idea to do a collaboration beer with a brewery in the city that could highlight ingredients from New York State. Naturally we thought of Gun Hill (they are one of several brewers in the city with a farm brewery license). Owner Dave Lopez informed us that…

Cask Release at Big Alice

One of the great things about Big Alice’s recent expansion is their ability to pour more cask beers. After recovering from your New Year celebrations on the first you can head on over to the new tap room at Big Alice Brewing in Long Island City from 5 to 8 p.m. on January 2 for a taste of their latest cask beer. The brewery’s creativity will be on display with a Kukicha Tea Porter that is dry hopped in the cask with Cluster hops and comes in at a whopping 13.4% ABV. Five ounce pours will be $5. Photo from…

2014 in Review

It has been quite an exciting year for us at BeerUnion. We released our first book, went on a book tour, and brewed our first batch of beer on a commercial system. We also visited Google. 2014 has been even more exciting for New York City beer. The number of brewers in the city climbed over twenty with openings in each of the outer boroughs. Combined with the Craft Act that passed through the state legislature and was recently signed into law by Governor Cuomo that allows brewers to sell pints, the opening of so many breweries means it’s even easier for New…
